What makes a good worship songwriter?

“Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts.”

Jeremiah 15:16

  1. Beautiful. Certainly the best song writers were called by the Lord to worship and write.

But I’d like to bring up a different aspect of this question. I think the best poets or song writers for God are people who have lived through trials and tribulations and found their solace in and with God. Mat Redmond is a good example. And so are you David.

Those who depended on the power of God to get them through these trials know what it is to worship God minute by minute, with every breath even though they were in pain, be it mental, physical, or spiritual.

The best writing advice that all good writers use and give is “Write what you know”. 🙂 I think this applies here.

  2. Absolutely. There are many things that make a good songwriter. When it comes to worship songs, though, I think feeding on Scripture is the most important dynamic. Otherwise, you will just write on subjective experiences instead of objective Truth. When you combine the two – Scripture and personal experience (which is necessary) – you have a powerful combination!
