Thoughts on Reading the Bible in a Year

I believe there is no greater discipline than reading through the Bible each year. To be balanced, we need two kinds of reading:

  1. I love what Pastor Jeff Leake calls “Bible Wringing”. This is where you meditate on scripture and allow the Holy Spirit to impress a few verses on your heart and mind. Absolutely necessary.
  2. Reading the Bible in a year. The problem with doing only “bible wringing” is you don’t cover much Scripture. We also need to  read a lot, and I recommend reading the Bible in a year.

For Christmas I received an ESV Study Bible. I am so excited to read through it this year.

I have heard many people say that they get bored reading the Old Testament. They love Paul’s letters, the Gospels, the Psalms, the Proverbs, but the OT is boring, they say. Here is what I am going to focus on this year and I want to encourage you to join me:

Behold the Glory of Christ throughout the entire Old Testament

Check out these verses:

“And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he [Jesus] interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself” (Luke 24:27).

“Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later” (Heb. 3:5).

“Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them [the OT Prophets] that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look” (I Peter 1:12).

Listen to the famous Puritan Pastor, John Owen:

“We cannot read, study, or become spiritually strong by meditating on the writings of the Old Testament unless we commit ourselves to considering the glory of Christ displayed in them.”

Read through the OT with a renewed passion this year. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see the glories of Christ present there. All Scripture points to the crucified and now reigning Son of God, Jesus Christ.
